Pretzel Dough
Method
Pretzel Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy. Add melted butter and salt, then gradually mix in the flour until a dough forms.
- 2
Knead the Dough
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- 3
Shape the Pretzel
Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 3 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 24 inches long. Braid the three ropes together to form a large pretzel braid.
- 4
Prepare the Baking Soda Bath
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil and add the baking soda. Carefully lower the braided pretzel into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove and place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- 5
Bake the Pretzel
Sprinkle coarse sea salt over the pretzel. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
- 6
Serve
Let the pretzel cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm with your choice of Beer Mac Sauce or Southern Mac Sauce for dipping.
