Prepare the Patties
In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined, then form into two equal-sized patties.

Cook the Patties
Heat a grill or frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on one side, then flip them and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes, or until they reach your desired doneness.

Toast the Buns
While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster until golden brown.

Assemble the Burgers
Place a cooked patty on the bottom half of each bun. Top with lettuce, tomato, and your choice of cheese. Place the top half of the bun on each burger.
