Calamari

Method

Calamari Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Calamari

Rinse the calamari rings under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Mix well.

  3. 3

    Prepare Egg Wash

In another bowl, beat the eggs until smooth.

  4. 4

    Coat the Calamari

Dip the calamari rings first into the flour mixture, then into the egg wash, and finally coat them with bread crumbs. Ensure they are fully covered.

Frying the Calamari

  1. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet or pot, heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 6

    Fry the Calamari

Fry the coated calamari rings in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

  3. 7

    Drain and Serve

Remove the fried calamari with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Season with additional salt if desired.

Marinara Sauce Preparation

  1. 8

    Cook the Marinara Sauce

In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  2. 9

    Add Tomatoes and Spices

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer.

  3. 10

    Simmer

Reduce the heat and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serving

  1. 11

    Plate the Dish

Serve the crispy calamari hot with the marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
