Hot Dogs & Buns

Toppings (basic)

Method

Hot Dogs & Buns

1

Prepare hot dogs (boil)

Fill a medium saucepan with about 3 cups of water and bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat. Add the 4 hot dogs and reduce heat to maintain a simmer. Cook for 4–6 minutes until heated through. Remove hot dogs with tongs and drain on a plate lined with a paper towel.

2

Alternative: Pan-sear (optional)

If you prefer a light sear, heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat, add the hot dogs and roll occasionally for 5–6 minutes until lightly browned. Remove and set aside.

3

Toast buns

Spread about 1/2 tsp butter inside each bun (use the 2 tsp butter total). Place buns butter-side down in a dry skillet over medium-low heat and toast 30–60 seconds until lightly golden. Alternatively, place under a broiler for 30–45 seconds, watching closely to avoid burning.

Toppings (basic)

4

Prepare the basic toppings: portion out ketchup (about 1 tablespoon per kid-friendly hot dog) and mustard (about 1/2 tablespoon per hot dog). Keep the shredded cheddar ready in a small bowl so it can be sprinkled on warm hot dogs.

5

If serving cheese-melted dogs: place toasted bun with cooked hot dog on a heatproof plate, sprinkle about 1–2 tablespoons shredded cheddar over the hot dog, and microwave for 10–12 seconds or place under broiler for 10–15 seconds until cheese softens and melts.

Optional mild toppings

6

If using diced pickles/relish or onions, measure and place in small ramekins so kids can choose their own toppings. Use the 1/4 cup relish divided among 4 hot dogs (about 1 teaspoon each) and the 2 tsp diced onion divided as desired.

For serving

7

Assemble each hot dog: place a cooked hot dog in a toasted bun. Add ketchup and mustard to taste, sprinkle with shredded cheddar if desired, and add any optional mild toppings. Serve with carrot sticks or apple slices and a cup of water or milk.

8

Safety note: let the hot dogs cool for 1–2 minutes before giving to small children to avoid burns. Cut into bite-sized pieces for toddlers or younger kids.
