Method
Prepare Glass & Ice
Chill glass
If possible, place the serving glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes beforehand to keep the soda colder longer.
Fill the chilled glass about three-quarters full with fresh ice cubes (approximately 1 cup). The ice helps maintain carbonation and chill the drink.
Assemble Soda
If using additional sweetness or flavor (simple syrup or flavored syrup pump), add it to the bottom of the glass now. Stir briefly to distribute.
Pour 2 fl oz of soda syrup into the glass. For a fountain-machine-style pour, aim for a 6:1 ratio of carbonated water to syrup (adjust to taste).
Slowly add 12 fl oz of cold carbonated water over the back of a spoon or down the side of the glass to reduce foaming and preserve carbonation. Pouring slowly also helps maintain the intended ratio.
Gently stir once with a long spoon to combine syrup and carbonated water without causing excessive fizzing.
Garnish & Serve
Taste and adjust: if the soda is too weak, add up to 0.5 tbs simple syrup or a small extra 0.5 tsp flavored syrup; if too sweet, add a splash more carbonated water (30–60 ml) and stir gently.
Garnish with a citrus wedge on the rim and/or a maraschino cherry dropped into the glass if desired.
Serve immediately with a straw. Keep remaining syrup refrigerated and carbonated water chilled for next pours.
