Method
Making the Caramel
Cook the Caramel
Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a boil. Do not stir. Allow it to cook until it turns a deep amber color, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat immediately to prevent burning.
Cool the Caramel
Quickly pour the caramel into a round 9-inch flan mold or pie dish, tilting the mold to evenly coat the bottom. Set aside to cool and harden while you prepare the flan mixture.
Making the Flan
Pour the Mixture
Carefully pour the flan mixture over the hardened caramel in the mold.
Prepare for Baking
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the flan mold in a larger baking dish and fill the larger dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan mold.
Bake the Flan
Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the flan is set and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool and Refrigerate
Once baked, remove the flan from the oven and let it cool in the water bath for about 30 minutes. Then, refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for best results.
Serve the Flan
To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it. Place a serving plate over the top of the mold and quickly invert it to release the flan. The caramel will flow over the top. Slice and enjoy!
