Method
Prep
- 1
Optional rim
If you want a salted rim, rub a lime wedge around the outer rim of a rocks glass, then dip the rim lightly into coarse or smoked salt to coat. Set the glass in the freezer to chill while you mix the cocktail.
- 2
Measure and prepare all ingredients: juice limes and grapefruit fresh, measure tequila, liqueur, syrup, and bitters. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
Mixing
- 3
Add 2 oz reposado tequila, 0.75 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz fresh grapefruit juice, 0.5 oz dry orange liqueur, 0.5 oz agave syrup, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters into the cocktail shaker filled with ice.
- 4
Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker feels very cold (this both chills and dilutes the drink to balance flavors).
- 5
Fill the prepared rocks glass with fresh ice (if you chilled the glass, remove it from the freezer and add ice). Strain the shaken cocktail over the ice using a fine strainer or the shaker's built-in strainer to remove small ice shards and pulp.
Finish & Serve
- 6
Express the oils of a grapefruit twist over the top of the drink by holding the twist skin-side down and giving it a quick squeeze, then drop it or rest a grapefruit wheel on the rim for garnish.
- 7
Serve immediately. Optionally offer a small stirring spoon if the guest prefers a slightly less diluted sip as they drink.
