Method

Meatballs Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Meatball Mixture

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.

  2. 2

    Form the Meatballs

Using your hands, form the mixture into five equal-sized meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter.

  3. 3

    Bake the Meatballs

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and place the meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until cooked through.

Tomato Sauce Preparation

  1. 4

    Cook the Sauce Base

In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion and minced garlic, cooking until softened, about 5 minutes.

  2. 5

    Combine Ingredients

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, salt, sugar, basil, and oregano. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Hoagie Assembly

  1. 6

    Assemble the Hoagie

Slice the baguette lengthwise, leaving a hinge. Place the cooked meatballs inside the baguette, and pour the tomato sauce generously over the meatballs.

  2. 7

    Add Cheese

Lay the provolone cheese slices over the meatballs and sauce, then place the hoagie under a broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  3. 8

    Serve

Serve the meatball hoagie hot, with extra tomato sauce on the side for dipping.
