Calamari Preparation

Prepare the Calamari
Rinse the calamari rings under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels.

Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.

Coat the Calamari
Add the calamari rings to the bowl with the dry mixture and toss until they are evenly coated.

Fry the Calamari
Carefully add the coated calamari rings to the hot oil in batches. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

Drain and Serve
Remove the fried calamari from the oil using a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Keep warm until serving.

Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Add the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper to the saucepan. Stir to combine.

Simmer the Sauce
Bring the sauce to a simmer, reduce the heat to low, and let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Finish with Basil
Stir in the chopped fresh basil and let the sauce cook for an additional 5 minutes.

Serve the marinara sauce warm alongside the crispy calamari.
