Calamari

Method

Calamari

  1. 1

    Prepare the Calamari

In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.

  2. 2

    Coat the Calamari

Dip each calamari ring into the beaten eggs, allowing any excess to drip off. Then, dredge the rings in the flour mixture until evenly coated.

  3. 3

    Bread the Calamari

After coating with the flour mixture, place the calamari rings in the bread crumbs, ensuring they are fully covered. Set aside on a plate.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet or pot, pour in the vegetable oil and heat over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  5. 5

    Fry the Calamari

Carefully add the breaded calamari rings to the hot oil in batches. Fry for about 2-3 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and drain on paper towels.

Marinara Sauce

  1. 6

    Heat the Olive Oil

In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

  2. 7

    Sauté the Garlic

Add the minced garlic to the saucepan and sauté for about 30 seconds, until fragrant.

  3. 8

    Add the Tomatoes and Seasonings

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes, then add the oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir to combine.

  4. 9

    Simmer the Sauce

Bring the sauce to a simmer and reduce the heat to low. Let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.

  5. 10

    Garnish and Serve

Remove from heat, garnish with chopped fresh parsley, and serve alongside the crispy fried calamari.
