Electrolyte Base

Method

Make Electrolyte Base

  1. 1

Measure 18 fl oz of room-temperature water into a clean mixing container or bottle with a lid.

  2. 2

Add 1 tsp table salt and 1 tsp potassium chloride to the water. These provide sodium and potassium — the key electrolytes. Screw on the lid and shake vigorously until salts are fully dissolved (about 20–30 seconds).

Add Carbohydrate & Flavor

  1. 3

Add 2 tablespoons granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon corn syrup or honey (optional) to the electrolyte solution. Shake or stir until the sugar is fully dissolved (about 30–60 seconds).

  2. 4

Stir in 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice and 1 teaspoon sports-flavor concentrate or powdered citrus drink to build a familiar Gatorade flavor profile. Taste and adjust: add up to 1 additional teaspoon sugar if you prefer sweeter; add a few drops more flavor concentrate for stronger taste.

Finish and Chill

  1. 5

If you want colored sports-drink appearance, add 1 drop food coloring and gently invert or stir to distribute until even.

  2. 6

Top up the bottle with 2 fl oz cold water so total volume equals 20 fl oz. Secure the lid and shake once more to combine.

  3. 7

Place the bottle in the refrigerator or add ice to chill it quickly. Serve cold.
