Method

For the Mozzarella Sticks

  1. 1

    Prepare the Cheese

Cut mozzarella cheese into 3-inch sticks if not pre-cut. Freeze the cheese sticks for about 30 minutes to firm them up.

  2. 2

    Set Up Breading Station

In three separate bowls, place flour in the first bowl, beaten eggs in the second, and a mixture of bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper in the third.

  3. 3

    Bread the Cheese Sticks

Remove frozen cheese sticks from the freezer. Dredge each stick in flour, dip in beaten eggs, and then coat with the breadcrumb mixture. Ensure they are evenly coated, and repeat for all cheese sticks.

  4. 4

    Heat Oil

In a large pot or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).

  5. 5

    Fry the Cheese Sticks

Carefully place breaded mozzarella sticks into the hot oil in batches. Fry for 1-2 minutes until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve hot with marinara sauce for dipping.

For the Marinara Sauce

  1. 7

    Heat Olive Oil

In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat.

  2. 8

    Sauté Garlic

Add minced garlic to the pan and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant, but not browned.

  3. 9

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer.

  4. 10

    Simmer Sauce

Reduce heat and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  5. 11

    Finish with Basil

Just before serving, stir in the fresh chopped basil.
