Method
Cooking the Patty

Prepare the Patty
In a bowl, season the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Form the beef into a patty about 3/4 inch thick.

Slice the Onion
Peel and slice the medium onion into thin rings.

Cook the Onions
In the same skillet used for the patty, add 1 tablespoon of butter. Once melted, add the sliced onions and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 10-15 minutes.
Assembling the Patti Melt

Layer the Ingredients
On one slice of rye bread, place the cooked patty, followed by the caramelized onions and top with Swiss cheese.

Grill the Patti Melt
Spread 1 tablespoon of butter on the outer side of each slice of bread. Place the assembled sandwich in the skillet over medium heat. Grill until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.

Serve
Once the cheese has melted and the bread is toasted, remove the sandwich from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot.
