Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Potatoes

Peel the russet potatoes and grate them using a box grater or food processor. Place the grated potatoes in a large bowl of cold water to remove excess starch. Let them soak for 10-15 minutes.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Onion

While the potatoes are soaking, peel and finely chop the onion. Set aside.

  3. 3

    Drain and Dry the Potatoes

After soaking, drain the potatoes and place them on a clean kitchen towel. Pat them dry thoroughly to remove as much moisture as possible.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Combine Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the grated potatoes, chopped onion, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed.

  2. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. You want enough oil to cover the bottom of the skillet.

  3. 6

    Cook the Hash Browns

Once the oil is hot, carefully add the potato mixture to the skillet, spreading it out evenly. Press down with a spatula to form a compact layer. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and crispy.

  4. 7

    Flip and Finish Cooking

Carefully flip the hash browns using a large spatula or by inverting them onto a plate and sliding them back into the skillet. Add butter to the skillet around the edges. Cook for another 5-7 minutes until the other side is also golden brown.

  5. 8

    Serve

Once both sides are crispy and golden, remove the hash browns from the skillet and drain on paper towels. Serve hot as a delicious breakfast side.
