Preparing the Patty

Mix the Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently until just combined. Avoid overmixing to keep the patties tender.

Form the Patties
Divide the mixture into two equal portions and shape each portion into a patty about 3/4 inch thick. Use your thumb to make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to help them cook evenly.

Add Cheese
In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty and cover with a lid to melt the cheese.
Assembling the Burger

Prepare the Toppings
While the patties are cooking, wash and dry the lettuce leaves. Slice the tomato into rounds.

Toast the Buns (Optional)
If desired, toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster until lightly golden.

Assemble the Burger
Place a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun. Add the cooked patty with melted cheese on top, followed by a slice of tomato. Cover with the top half of the bun.
