Muddle the Sugar
In an old-fashioned glass, add the sugar and bitters. Muddle these together until the sugar has mostly dissolved.

Add the Bourbon
Pour in the bourbon over the muddled sugar and bitters mixture.

Add Ice
Fill the glass with ice cubes to chill the drink.

Top with Soda
Add the soda water on top of the ice and bourbon mixture.

Garnish
Express the oils from the orange peel over the drink and then drop it into the glass. Add the maraschino cherry for garnish.

Stir and Serve
Give the drink a gentle stir to combine all the ingredients and serve immediately.
