Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the basmati rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water for about 2-3 minutes until the water runs clear. This helps to remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming gummy.

  2. 2

    Soak the Rice

Transfer the rinsed rice to a bowl and cover it with water. Let it soak for at least 30 minutes. This step is optional but recommended for better texture.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Combine Ingredients

In a medium saucepan, combine the soaked (or unsoaked) basmati rice, 1.5 cups of water, and 0.5 tsp of salt. Stir gently to combine.

  2. 4

    Bring to a Boil

Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once it reaches a boil, reduce the heat to low.

  3. 5

    Cover and Simmer

Cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid and let it simmer on low heat for about 15-20 minutes, or until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.

  4. 6

    Fluff the Rice

Once cooked, remove the saucepan from the heat but keep it covered for an additional 5-10 minutes. Then, use a fork to gently fluff the rice, separating the grains.

  5. 7

    Add Optional Ingredients

If desired, stir in 1 tablespoon of butter and 1/4 cup of chopped fresh herbs for added flavor.
