Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Okra

Rinse the okra under cold water and pat dry with a clean towel. Trim the stems and cut the okra into halves or quarters, depending on their size.

Batter Preparation

  1. 2

    Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine cornmeal, all-purpose flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Whisk together until well combined.

  2. 3

    Add Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, beat the egg and then mix in the water. Pour the egg mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. The batter should be thick but pourable.

Frying

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter in; it should sizzle immediately.

  2. 5

    Coat the Okra

Take each piece of okra and dip it into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated. Allow any excess batter to drip off.

  3. 6

    Fry the Okra

Carefully place the coated okra into the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the okra and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Serving

  1. 7

    Serve

Serve the okra fries warm. You can enjoy them plain or with your favorite dipping sauce.
