Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Lentils

Rinse the black lentils under cold running water until the water runs clear. Soak them in water for 2-3 hours for better cooking.

Cooking

  1. 2

    Cook Lentils

In a large pot, add the soaked lentils and 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, and then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for about 30-40 minutes, or until the lentils are tender.

  2. 3

    Prepare the Tempering

While the lentils are cooking, heat the cooking oil or ghee in a separate pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.

  3. 4

    Add Aromatics

Add the chopped onion to the pan and sauté until it turns golden brown. Then add the minced ginger, garlic, and slit green chili. Sauté for another 2-3 minutes until fragrant.

  4. 5

    Incorporate Tomatoes and Spices

Stir in the chopped tomato, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes soften and the oil starts to separate, about 5-7 minutes.

  5. 6

    Combine with Lentils

Once the lentils are cooked and tender, pour the tempering mixture into the pot with the lentils. Add garam masala and stir well to combine. Simmer for another 5-10 minutes to let the flavors meld.

Serving

  1. 7

    Garnish and Serve

Remove the pot from heat and garnish the Black Daal with chopped cilantro. Serve hot with rice or naan.
