Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel the large onions and slice them into 1/4 inch thick rings. Make sure to separate the rings and set them aside.

Batter Preparation

  1. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Whisk together until well-blended.

  2. 3

    Add Wet Ingredients

In the same bowl, add the egg and cold water. Mix until the batter is smooth and free of lumps.

Coating

  1. 4

    Prepare Breadcrumbs

Place the breadcrumbs in a shallow dish. This will be used for coating the onion rings.

  2. 5

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring first into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off, then into the breadcrumbs, ensuring they are fully coated. Set aside on a plate.

Frying

  1. 6

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat 4 cups of vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 7

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place a few coated onion rings into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry until golden brown, about 2-4 minutes per side.

  3. 8

    Drain and Serve

Once golden brown, remove the onion rings using a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
