Ingredients for French Fries
Method
Directions for Preparing French Fries
- 1
Prepare the Potatoes
Begin by washing and peeling the Russet potatoes. Cut them into long, even strips, about 1/4 inch thick. Rinse the potato strips in cold water to remove excess starch, which helps achieve crispiness.
- 2
Soak the Potatoes
Place the cut potato strips in a bowl of cold water and soak them for at least 30 minutes. This step is crucial as it helps draw out the starch, making the fries crispy.
- 3
Heat the Oil
In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer for accurate measurement.
- 4
Dry the Potatoes
Once the potatoes have soaked, drain and thoroughly dry them using a clean kitchen towel or paper towels. It's essential to remove excess moisture to prevent oil splatter.
- 5
Fry the Potatoes - First Batch
Carefully add the dried potato strips to the hot oil in small batches. Fry them for about 5-7 minutes until they turn golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the fries and drain them on paper towels.
- 6
Fry the Potatoes - Second Batch
Let the oil come back to temperature and then return the fries to the oil for a second fry to enhance their crispiness, about 2-3 minutes. Again, remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain.
- 7
Season the Fries
While the fries are still hot, season them generously with salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder according to your taste preference. Toss them gently to ensure even coverage.
- 8
Serve Hot
Serve the crispy golden French fries immediately while they are hot, along with your favorite dipping sauces.
