Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate the yeast

In a small bowl, warm the milk to about 110°F (43°C). Stir in the active dry yeast and a tablespoon of granulated sugar. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix the dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and melted butter. Add the yeast mixture and the egg mixture to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead the dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    Let the dough rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  1. 5

    Prepare the coating

In a separate bowl, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon.

  2. 6

    Prepare the butter

Melt the cup of unsalted butter in a microwave-safe bowl.

Assembling the Monkey Bread

  1. 7

    Shape the dough

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and tear off small pieces (about 1 inch in size).

  2. 8

    Coat the dough pieces

Dip each piece of dough in melted butter, then roll it in the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat.

  3. 9

    Layer the dough

In a greased bundt pan, layer the coated dough pieces randomly. Make sure to fill any gaps.

Baking the Monkey Bread

  1. 10

    Bake

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake the monkey bread for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown.

  2. 11

    Cool

Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before inverting onto a serving plate.

Caramel Icing

  1. 12

    Prepare the caramel icing

In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, butter, and heavy cream. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture comes to a boil. Let it boil for 2 minutes without stirring, then remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

  2. 13

    Drizzle the icing

Drizzle the warm caramel icing over the monkey bread before serving.
