Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, mix together the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, and vanilla extract until well combined.

  4. 4

    Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures

Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.

  5. 5

    Bake the Cakes

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  6. 6

    Cool the Cakes

Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.

Frosting Preparation

  1. 7

    Prepare Cream Cheese Frosting

In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter together until smooth and creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until fully combined and fluffy.

Chocolate Sauce Preparation

  1. 8

    Make the Chocolate Sauce

In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the chocolate chips and heavy cream. Stir until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

Whipped Cream Preparation

  1. 9

    Prepare Whipped Cream

In a chilled bowl, beat the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until soft peaks form. Be careful not to overwhip.

Assembly

  1. 10

    Assemble the Cake

Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of cream cheese frosting on top. Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.

  2. 11

    Add Chocolate Sauce

Drizzle the chocolate sauce over the top of the frosted cake, letting it drip down the sides.

  3. 12

    Serve with Whipped Cream

Serve each slice with a dollop of whipped cream on the side.
