In a shallow dish, combine cornmeal, flour, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.

Soak the Catfish
Pour buttermilk into another shallow dish. Dip catfish fillets into buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off.

Dredge the Fish
Coat the catfish fillets in the cornmeal mixture, pressing gently to adhere.

Heat the Oil
In a large skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot.

Fry the Catfish
Carefully place the coated catfish fillets in the hot oil. Fry for about 3-4 minutes per side or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Prepare hushpuppies according to package instructions and fry them in the same oil until golden brown.
