Tamale Filling and Dough
Method
Preparation and Cooking
- 1
Prepare the Filling
In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain any excess fat.
- 2
Season the Beef
Add chili powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper to the beef. Stir to combine and cook for another 5 minutes. Set aside.
- 3
Make the Masa Dough
In a large bowl, combine corn masa flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually mix in vegetable oil and beef broth until a soft dough forms.
- 4
Assemble the Tamales
Take a soaked corn husk, spread about 2 tablespoons of masa dough onto the husk, add 1 tablespoon of seasoned beef filling, and fold the sides over to enclose the filling.
- 5
Steam the Tamales
Place the tamales upright in a steamer basket. Cover and steam for about 1 hour or until the masa is firm.
- 6
Prepare the Chili
Simmer your favorite chili recipe or use a pre-made chili to serve with the tamales.
- 7
Serve
Serve the hot tamales with chili, ranch dressing, and saltines on the side.
