Alternative Tomato & Onion Variation
Butter, Lemon, and Garlic Calamari
1. Prepare the squid
Clean the squid thoroughly and slice into 1/2-inch rings. Pat dry with a paper towel.
2. Saute aromatics
Heat olive oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
3. Cook squid
Add squid rings to the skillet and sauté for 2–3 minutes until just opaque and tender. Do not overcook.
4. Add lemon and season
Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the squid, season with salt and pepper, and stir to combine. Cook for another 30 seconds.
5. Serve
Remove from heat and serve immediately with optional lemon wedges on the side.
Tomato and Onion Calamari Variation
6. Prepare the squid
Clean the squid and slice into rings. Dry with a paper towel.
7. Saute vegetables
Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and cook until translucent, about 3 minutes. Add chopped tomatoes and cook for another 3–4 minutes until soft.
8. Add squid
Add squid rings to the pan and sauté with the tomato-onion mixture for 2–3 minutes until the squid is cooked through but still tender.
9. Season and serve
Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately.
