Wet Ingredients
For Frying
Method
Preparation
- 1
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine cornmeal, all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Stir until well mixed.
- 2
Mix Wet Ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, egg, and finely chopped onion until smooth and fully blended.
- 3
Combine Mixtures
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay.
Frying
- 4
Heat Oil
In a deep skillet or frying pan, pour in vegetable oil and heat over medium-high heat until hot (about 350°F or 175°C).
- 5
Fry Hushpuppies
Using a tablespoon, drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil. Fry in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Cook until golden brown on one side, about 2-3 minutes.
- 6
Flip and Cook
Carefully flip the hushpuppies using a slotted spoon and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until evenly golden brown.
- 7
Drain
Once cooked, remove the hushpuppies from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
