Butter Ingredients
Method
Butter Preparation
- 1
Whipping the Cream
Pour 2 cups of heavy cream into a large mixing bowl. Using an electric mixer, beat the cream on medium speed until it thickens and forms soft peaks. This usually takes about 5-7 minutes.
- 2
Continue Whipping
Continue to whip the cream for an additional 2-3 minutes until it turns into stiff peaks and starts to separate. You will see buttermilk begin to pool at the bottom of the bowl.
- 3
Straining the Buttermilk
Once the butter has formed and separated from the buttermilk, pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth to separate the butter from the buttermilk. Keep the buttermilk for other recipes if desired.
- 4
Kneading the Butter
Transfer the butter to a clean bowl and knead it with your hands or a spatula to remove any remaining liquid. Run cold water over the butter while kneading to help wash out the buttermilk.
- 5
Salting the Butter
Once the buttermilk has been fully washed out, add 1 teaspoon of salt to the butter. Mix well to incorporate the salt throughout the butter.
- 6
Storing the Butter
Transfer the finished butter to an airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, or you can freeze it for longer storage.
