Prepare the Chiles
Roast the Pasilla Negro chiles over an open flame or in a dry skillet until they are charred. Remove from heat, let cool, and then remove the stems and seeds.

Blend the Base
In a blender, combine the roasted chiles, tomatoes, thyme, salt, and black pepper with 2 cups of water. Blend until smooth.
Cooking

Cook the Soup
In a large pot, heat the vegetable broth and the blended mixture. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 15 minutes.

Add Masa
In a separate bowl, mix the masa harina with 1 cup of water to form a smooth paste. Stir this into the simmering soup and cook for an additional 10 minutes, stirring frequently.

Finish with Piñon
For the final touch, add the piñon nuts to the soup and let simmer for another 5 minutes.
