Method

Preparing the Gyro Meat

  1. 1

    Mix the Meat Mixture

In a large bowl, combine the ground lamb and ground beef. Add minced garlic, dried oregano, ground cumin, salt, black pepper, chopped red onion, and the egg. Mix well until all ingredients are fully incorporated.

  2. 2

    Form the Meat Loaf

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Shape the meat mixture into a loaf shape and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Drizzle olive oil on top.

  3. 3

    Bake the Meat

Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C). Remove from oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

Making the Tzatziki Sauce

  1. 4

    Combine Ingredients

In a medium bowl, mix Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, minced garlic, olive oil, chopped dill, lemon juice, and salt. Stir until well combined.

  2. 5

    Chill the Sauce

Cover the tzatziki sauce and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Assembling the Gyros

  1. 6

    Prepare the Pita

Warm the pita breads in a pan or oven until soft and pliable.

  2. 7

    Assemble the Gyro

Slice the cooked gyro meat thinly. Place a portion of the meat on each pita, then top with sliced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, crumbled feta cheese, and a generous dollop of tzatziki sauce.

  3. 8

    Serve

Fold the pita over the filling and serve immediately. Enjoy your homemade gyros!
