Southern Fried Chicken

Method

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

    Marinate the Chicken

In a large bowl, combine the buttermilk, salt, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Add the chicken pieces and ensure they are fully submerged in the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight for best results.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Coating

In a separate bowl, mix the all-purpose flour with a pinch of salt and pepper. This will be used to coat the chicken.

  3. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a large, heavy-bottomed skillet or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  4. 4

    Coat the Chicken

Remove the chicken from the marinade, letting excess liquid drip off. Dredge each piece in the flour mixture, ensuring an even coating. Shake off any excess flour.

  5. 5

    Fry the Chicken

Carefully place the coated chicken pieces into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 12-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and cooked through (internal temperature of 165°F or 74°C).

  6. 6

    Drain and Rest

Once cooked, remove the chicken from the oil and place it on a wire rack or paper towels to drain excess oil. Let it rest for a few minutes.

  7. 7

    Serve

Serve the fried chicken alongside prepared mashed potatoes, gravy, and coleslaw. Drizzle hot honey over the chicken just before serving.
