Fried Green Tomatoes

Buttermilk BBQ Dipping Sauce

Method

Fried Green Tomatoes

  1. 1

    Prepare the Tomatoes

Wash the green tomatoes and slice them into 1/2 inch thick rounds.

  2. 2

    Set Up Breading Station

In one bowl, place the all-purpose flour. In a second bowl, whisk the eggs and buttermilk together until well combined. In a third bowl, mix the cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and paprika.

  3. 3

    Bread the Tomatoes

Dip each tomato slice first into the flour, coating both sides. Next, dip it into the egg mixture, and finally coat it with the cornmeal mixture.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  5. 5

    Fry the Tomatoes

Carefully place the breaded tomato slices in the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.

  6. 6

    Drain and Serve

Once fried, remove the tomatoes from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve warm.

Buttermilk BBQ Dipping Sauce

  1. 7

    Mix the Ingredients

In a mixing bowl, combine mayonnaise, buttermilk, BBQ sauce, hot sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt. Mix until smooth and well combined.

  2. 8

    Adjust Seasoning

Taste the sauce and adjust the salt or hot sauce if needed.

  3. 9

    Serve

Transfer the dipping sauce to a serving bowl and serve alongside the fried green tomatoes.
