Pasta
Cheese Sauce
Topping (optional)
Method
Cooking Pasta
Boil Water
Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a rolling boil over high heat.
Cook Pasta
Add the elbow macaroni to the boiling water. Cook according to package directions until al dente, usually about 7-8 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Drain Pasta
Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside.
Making Cheese Sauce
Add Flour
Once the butter is melted, whisk in the all-purpose flour. Cook for about 1 minute, stirring constantly, to create a roux.
Add Milk
Gradually add the milk to the roux, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Continue to cook until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
Incorporate Cheese
Remove the pot from heat and stir in the cheddar cheese until fully melted and smooth. Season with salt, black pepper, and paprika.
Combining Ingredients
Mix Pasta and Cheese Sauce
Add the drained pasta back to the pot with the cheese sauce. Stir well to combine, ensuring all pasta is coated with the sauce.
Prepare Topping (optional)
If using, mix breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese in a small bowl.
Bake (optional)
Transfer the mac-n-cheese to a baking dish, sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture on top, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
