Method

Preparing the Chili

  1. 1

    Cook Ground Beef

In a large pot over medium heat, add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. This should take about 5-7 minutes.

  2. 2

    Add Onions and Garlic

Add the chopped onion and minced garlic cloves to the pot. Sauté for an additional 3-4 minutes until the onion becomes translucent.

  3. 3

    Combine Sauce and Beans

Pour in the tomato sauce and add the drained kidney beans to the pot. Stir until well combined.

  4. 4

    Season the Chili

Stir in the chili powder, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly to ensure the spices are evenly distributed.

  5. 5

    Simmer the Chili

Add the water and bring the chili to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook uncovered for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Cooking the Hot Dogs

  1. 6

    Boil or Grill Hot Dogs

While the chili is simmering, prepare the hot dogs by either boiling them in water for about 5-7 minutes or grilling them until heated through and slightly charred.

  2. 7

    Toast the Buns

If desired, toast the hot dog buns on the grill or in the oven for a few minutes until lightly browned.

Assembling the Chili Dogs

  1. 8

    Load the Buns

Place each hot dog in a toasted bun.

  2. 9

    Top with Chili

Spoon a generous amount of the homemade chili over each hot dog.

  3. 10

    Add Toppings

Finally, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese and chopped onion over the chili topped hot dogs.
