Method

Preparing the Cake

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, beat the eggs, then add the whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until combined.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

  5. 5

    Add Boiling Water

Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin.

  6. 6

    Bake the Cakes

Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  7. 7

    Cool the Cakes

Once baked, remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Making the Frosting (Optional)

  1. 8

    Prepare the Frosting

In a medium bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing until smooth.

  2. 9

    Add Milk and Vanilla

Add the milk and vanilla extract to the frosting mixture. Beat until fluffy and spreadable.

  3. 10

    Frost the Cake

Once the cake layers are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous amount of frosting on top, then place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides as desired.
