Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill Glass

Place a coupe or Nick & Nora glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes or fill with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill.

  2. 2

    Measure Ingredients

Using a jigger, measure 2 oz rye whiskey, 0.75 oz cognac, 0.75 oz sweet vermouth, and 0.5 oz Amaro Meletti into a mixing glass or shaker without ice.

  3. 3

    Add Bitters

Add 3 dashes of mole bitters to the mixing glass. Mole bitters add a subtle cocoa-spice depth that complements the amaro and rye.

  4. 4

    Add Ice and Stir

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes to about 3/4 full. Stir gently with a bar spoon for 30–40 seconds (20–30 full strokes) until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted — the spoon should leave a slight trail on the liquid.

  5. 5

    Prepare Glass

Empty the chilled serving glass of ice or water and, if desired, give it a quick spritz of orange oil: hold an orange peel over the glass, skin side down, and give it a quick snap to express oils.

  6. 6

    Strain

Double-strain the cocktail from the mixing glass into the chilled coupe/Nick & Nora using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to remove any small ice shards.

  7. 7

    Garnish and Serve

Express the oils from one orange twist over the drink, run the peel around the rim, and drop it into the glass. Serve immediately.
