Pasta

Topping (Optional)

Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Pasta

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually around 8-10 minutes.

  2. 2

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside.

Making Cheddar Sauce

  1. 3

    Melt Butter

In the same pot used for the pasta, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat.

  2. 4

    Create Roux

Add the all-purpose flour to the melted butter and whisk continuously for about 1-2 minutes until it forms a paste (roux).

  3. 5

    Add Milk

Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to ensure there are no lumps. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens, about 4-5 minutes.

  4. 6

    Incorporate Cheese

Lower the heat and stir in the sharp cheddar cheese until completely melted and smooth. Season with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper to taste.

Combining and Serving

  1. 7

    Mix Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained pasta to the cheese sauce and stir until well combined.

  2. 8

    Prepare Topping (Optional)

If using, mix breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese in a small bowl. Sprinkle over the top of the mac and cheese.

  3. 9

    Bake (Optional)

Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown.

  4. 10

    Serve

Spoon mac and cheese into bowls and enjoy while hot!
