Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil the Pasta

In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt and the elbow macaroni. Cook according to package instructions, usually around 8-10 minutes, until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 2

    Prepare the Roux

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, add the all-purpose flour and stir continuously for 2-3 minutes until the mixture is golden and bubbly.

  2. 3

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue cooking, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and begins to bubble, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 4

    Incorporate Cheeses

Lower the heat and stir in the cheddar cheese and cream cheese until melted and smooth. Season with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.

Combining and Serving

  1. 5

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is fully coated with the creamy sauce.

  2. 6

    Optional Topping

If using, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). In a bowl, mix the bread crumbs and grated Parmesan cheese. Sprinkle the mixture over the macaroni and cheese and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

  3. 7

    Serve

Serve the mac and cheese hot, optionally with your favorite sides like steamed broccoli or a fresh salad.
