Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Whisk together until evenly mixed.

  2. 2

    Add Wet Ingredients

Add the vegetable oil and warm water to the dry ingredients. Mix with a fork or your hands until a dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes or until the dough is smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    Rest the Dough

Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Frying the Sopapillas

  1. 5

    Heat Oil

In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. The oil should be hot but not smoking.

  2. 6

    Roll Out Dough

After resting, divide the dough into small balls (about golf ball size). Roll each ball out on a floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness.

  3. 7

    Fry the Sopapillas

Carefully place the rolled dough into the hot oil. Fry until puffy and golden brown, about 1-2 minutes on each side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Finishing Touches

  1. 8

    Mix Cinnamon and Sugar

In a small bowl, mix together the cinnamon and sugar until well combined.

  2. 9

    Season the Sopapillas

While the sopapillas are still warm, sprinkle them with the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Drizzle with honey if desired before serving.
