Pretzel Dough

White Cheese Sauce

Method

Pretzel Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.

  2. 2

    Combine Ingredients

Add salt and flour to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead Dough

On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    First Rise

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  5. 5

    Shape Pretzels

After rising, punch down the dough and divide it into four equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and shape it into a pretzel.

Boiling and Baking

  1. 6

    Prepare Baking Soda Bath

In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil and add baking soda.

  2. 7

    Boil Pretzels

Carefully add each shaped pretzel to the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  3. 8

    Sprinkle with Sea Salt

Sprinkle coarse sea salt on top of each pretzel.

  4. 9

    Bake Pretzels

Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and bake the pretzels for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.

White Cheese Sauce Preparation

  1. 10

    Melt Butter

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.

  2. 11

    Make Roux

Add the flour to the melted butter and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes until it forms a paste.

  3. 12

    Add Milk

Slowly whisk in the milk until the mixture is smooth. Continue to cook until it thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

  4. 13

    Add Cheese and Seasoning

Stir in the shredded white cheddar cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt. Cook until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth.
