Method

Preparing the Burger Patty

  1. 1

    Mix Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently with your hands until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

  2. 2

    Form Patties

Divide the meat mixture into two equal portions and form each portion into a patty, about 3/4 inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent puffing during cooking.

Cooking the Burger Patty

  1. 3

    Cook the Patties

Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, place the patties on the grill or skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side. Flip the patties and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes for medium doneness.

  2. 4

    Add Cheese

In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty and cover the grill or skillet to melt the cheese.

Preparing the Toppings

  1. 5

    Slice the Vegetables

While the patties are cooking, wash and slice the tomato into medium slices and the red onion into thin rings.

  2. 6

    Prepare Lettuce

Rinse the leafy lettuce and pat dry with a paper towel.

Assembling the Burger

  1. 7

    Toast the Buns

Optionally, toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster until golden brown.

  2. 8

    Build the Burger

On the bottom half of each bun, place a leaf of lettuce, followed by the cooked patty with melted cheese, a slice of tomato, and rings of red onion. Top with ketchup and mustard to taste, then cover with the top half of the bun.
