Method
Caramel Preparation
- 1
Make the Caramel
In a small saucepan, combine 3 tablespoons of granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon of water. Heat over medium-low heat, stirring gently until the sugar dissolves.
- 2
Caramelize the Sugar
Once the sugar has dissolved, stop stirring and allow the mixture to come to a boil. Continue to cook without stirring until the mixture turns a golden amber color, about 5-7 minutes.
- 3
Coat the Baking Dish
Immediately pour the caramel into a round baking dish, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.
Custard Preparation
- 4
Blend the Ingredients
In a blender, combine 4 large eggs, 1 can of sweetened condensed milk, 1 can of evaporated milk, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Blend until smooth and well mixed.
- 5
Pour into Baking Dish
Carefully pour the custard mixture over the set caramel in the baking dish.
Baking
- 6
Prepare the Water Bath
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the baking dish with the custard into a larger baking pan. Fill the larger pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the smaller dish.
- 7
Bake
Bake in the preheated oven for about 50-60 minutes, or until the custard is set (it should slightly jiggle in the center).
- 8
Cool the Flan
Remove the baking dish from the water bath and let it cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
Serving
- 9
Unmold the Flan
To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it. Invert onto a plate, allowing the caramel to flow over the custard.
- 10
Slice and Enjoy
Slice the flan into wedges and enjoy this delicious traditional dessert!
