Preparing the Topping

Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Melt the butter
In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the unsalted butter.

Prepare the pan
Once melted, pour the butter into a 9-inch round cake pan. Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the melted butter.

Arrange the pineapple
Place the pineapple slices on top of the brown sugar mixture, arranging them in a circular pattern. Place a maraschino cherry in the center of each pineapple slice.

Combine dry ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

Combine wet and dry
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
Baking the Cake

Pour the batter
Carefully pour the cake batter over the arranged pineapple and cherries in the cake pan.

Bake the cake
Place the cake in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, carefully invert the cake onto a serving platter.
