Baklava Ingredients

Method

Baklava Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Nut Filling

In a bowl, combine the chopped walnuts, chopped almonds, ground cinnamon, and 1 cup of sugar. Mix well and set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Filo Pastry

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Melt the butter in a saucepan. Take a sheet of filo pastry, brush it with melted butter, and layer it into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Repeat this process, layering about 8 sheets of filo.

  3. 3

    Layer the Nut Filling

Spread a portion of the nut mixture evenly over the layered filo. Add another 4-5 sheets of filo on top, brushing each with butter. Repeat this process of adding nuts and layering filo until all ingredients are used, finishing with a top layer of filo.

  4. 4

    Cut the Baklava

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes, making sure to cut through all layers.

  5. 5

    Bake the Baklava

Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.

  6. 6

    Prepare the Syrup

While the baklava is baking, combine the remaining sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

  7. 7

    Add the Syrup

Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup over it, ensuring to cover all pieces.

  8. 8

    Cool and Serve

Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving. Enjoy!
