Method
Preparation of Olive Salad
- 1
Make the Olive Salad
In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped green olives, black olives, pickled vegetables, and minced garlic.
- 2
Add Seasoning
Drizzle the olive oil and red wine vinegar over the olive mixture. Sprinkle in the dried oregano and mix well to combine.
- 3
Chill
Cover the bowl and let the olive salad sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Assembly
- 4
Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
- 5
Prepare the Muffaletta Bread
Slice the muffaletta bread horizontally in half. You can hollow out some of the bread if desired to make room for the fillings.
- 6
Layer the Meats
Layer the salami, ham, and pepperoni evenly on the bottom half of the bread.
- 7
Add the Cheeses
Sprinkle the fontina cheese and mozzarella cheese over the meats.
- 8
Top with Olive Salad
Spread the prepared olive salad generously over the cheese.
- 9
Close and Bake
Place the top half of the bread back on and wrap the sandwich in aluminum foil. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, until the cheeses melt and the bread is warm.
- 10
Slice and Serve
Remove from the oven, unwrap the foil, and let cool for a few minutes. Slice into wedges and serve warm.
