Instructions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Dough

In a bowl, activate the yeast by mixing it with warm milk and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and the egg, then mix until a dough forms.

  3. 3

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.

  4. 4

    Prepare the Butter Layer

While the dough is rising, prepare the butter layer by placing the unsalted butter between two sheets of parchment paper and rolling it out into a square about 1/2 inch thick. Chill in the refrigerator.

  5. 5

    Laminate the Dough

Once the dough has doubled in size, roll it out into a large rectangle. Place the chilled butter layer in the center and fold the dough over it, sealing the edges.

  6. 6

Roll the dough out gently into a larger rectangle, then fold it into thirds (like a letter). Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Repeat this process two more times.

  7. 7

    Shape the Croissants

After the final roll, cut the dough into triangles. Place a few chocolate chips at the wide end and roll them up tightly.

  8. 8

Place the rolled croissants on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.

  9. 9

    Bake

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the croissants for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.
