Custard
Caramel
Method
Caramel Preparation
- 1
Make the Caramel
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup of sugar and 1 tablespoon of water. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves.
- 2
Cook the Caramel
Increase the heat to medium-high and allow the mixture to boil without stirring. Watch closely until it turns a golden amber color, about 5-7 minutes.
- 3
Coat the Pan
Quickly pour the caramel into a round flan mold or individual ramekins, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool.
Custard Preparation
- 4
- 5
Pour Custard into Mold
Carefully pour the custard mixture over the cooled caramel in the mold or ramekins.
Baking
- 6
Prepare Baking Pan
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the flan mold into a larger baking dish. Fill the baking dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan mold.
- 7
Bake
Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes or until the custard is set and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cooling and Serving
- 8
Cool the Flan
Remove the flan from the oven and allow it to cool in the water bath for about 30 minutes. Then, refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- 9
Unmold and Serve
To serve, run a knife around the edge of the flan to loosen it. Invert it onto a serving plate, allowing the caramel to flow over the top. Slice and enjoy!
