Method

Filling Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the apples

Core, peel, and slice the black apples into thin wedges.

  2. 2

    Mix the filling

In a large bowl, combine the sliced black apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss until the apples are evenly coated. Set aside to marinate for about 15 minutes.

Crust Preparation

  1. 3

    Make the dough

In a large bowl, mix the all-purpose flour and salt. Cut in the unsalted butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  2. 4

    Form the crust

Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough comes together. Divide the dough in half, shape into discs, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Assembling the Black Apple

  1. 5

    Roll out the dough

On a floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to fit a 9-inch pie pan. Place it in the pan and fill it with the apple mixture.

  2. 6

    Prepare the topping

In a medium bowl, mix brown sugar, oats, butter, and chopped nuts (if using) until crumbly. Sprinkle evenly over the apple filling.

  3. 7

    Cover with the top crust

Roll out the second disc of dough and place it over the topping. Cut a few slits in the top to allow steam to escape. Crimp the edges to seal.

Baking

  1. 8

    Preheat the oven

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. 9

    Bake the pie

Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. Let it cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
