Pasta

Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring 4 liters of water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt to the water.

  2. 2

    Cook Spaghetti

Once the water is boiling, add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente (usually about 8-10 minutes).

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the spaghetti in a colander and set aside, reserving a cup of pasta water.

Making the Marinara Sauce

  1. 4

    Sauté Onion and Garlic

In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent (about 5 minutes). Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  2. 5

    Add Tomatoes and Seasoning

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes and stir in the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Bring the sauce to a simmer.

  3. 6

    Simmer the Sauce

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.

  4. 7

    Finish the Sauce

Stir in the chopped fresh basil leaves just before serving.

Combining Pasta and Sauce

  1. 8

    Combine

Add the drained spaghetti to the marinara sauce, tossing to coat evenly. If the sauce is too thick, add a little reserved pasta water to reach desired consistency.

  2. 9

    Serve

Plate the spaghetti marinara and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese before serving.
