Method

Mixing the Dough

  1. 1

    Combine Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of sourdough starter and 1.5 cups of lukewarm water. Mix until the starter is dissolved.

  2. 2

    Add Flour and Salt

Gradually add 4 cups of all-purpose flour and 2 tsp of salt to the starter mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon until a rough dough forms.

Kneading and First Rise

  1. 3

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

  2. 4

    First Rise

Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 4-6 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

Shaping and Second Rise

  1. 5

    Shape the Dough

Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release excess air. Shape it into a round loaf by folding the edges towards the center.

  2. 6

    Second Rise

Place the shaped dough on a floured surface, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise for another 1-2 hours until it has puffed up.

Baking

  1. 7

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) for at least 30 minutes before baking.

  2. 8

    Bake the Bread

Transfer the risen dough to a baking stone or a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Optionally, brush the top with 1 tbsp of olive oil and sprinkle with seeds. Bake for 30-35 minutes until the crust is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Cooling

  1. 9

    Cool the Bread

Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 1 hour before slicing.
